I’ve had this same feeling for the last few years too, a resistance to the expected New Year’s resolutions. It feels out of balance to push so hard when there is so little energy. Better to plan and think and contemplate about the coming spring when there is natural movement towards growth and change. And most importantly let ourselves rest in a time when nature herself is resting.
Loved this. Thank you for sharing! Kristin and 3 more storms hit the silver coast in Portugal too, I’ve been humbled by nature’s forces. Not much we can do but to surrender… and adapt to these rhythms 🌀
I noticed this a long time ago, which is why I’ve been studying my ancestors for about 10 years now and gradually exploring my roots. So far I’ve managed to trace them back to around the year 1700. Along the way I discovered so much — where they came from, how they lived, what kind of lives they had. It’s been incredibly fascinating and I’m still continuing this journey.
Over time I started to explore not only my family history, but also the history of places and history in general. And the more I learn, the closer I feel to nature and to old crafts. I’m often amazed by how people lived in the past — how much simplicity, meaning and connection to the land there was.
I feel increasingly drawn to old calendars, to the Julian calendar and Slavic traditions — my ancestors come from there. I’ve been living for a long time more in tune with the seasons and natural rhythms than with the modern calendar. And the deeper I go, the stronger my inner foundation feels.
I think genealogy could be a beautiful parallel path for you as well. It’s not a fast process, but over time it reveals a lot and gives a deep sense of roots and grounding. We already carry the strength and wisdom of our ancestors — in our genes, in our bodies, in our intuition.
Yes, winter is when the work is happening underground in restoration and then preparation for warmer weather and longer sunny days. The other thing nature shows us is that there is no single day where everything bursts forth all at once, it’s a transition and even the same tree on one side of a slope vs another will be on a different schedule.

Beautifully written. I actually spoke about this in my last newsletter🤗
Nice little update. More of this please. + photos.
Hi from South Africa!
Yes, winter is when the work is happening underground in restoration and then preparation for warmer weather and longer sunny days. The other thing nature shows us is that there is no single day where everything bursts forth all at once, it’s a transition and even the same tree on one side of a slope vs another will be on a different schedule.
„not as nostalgia, but as a kind of remembering“ loved that!
